Mobile internet use rising

According to a recent story on the BBC news website, research by Nielsen shows that mobile internet usage is significantly growing.

The study showed that 7.3m people accessed the net via their mobile phones, during the second and third quarters of 2008. This is an increase of 25% compared to a growth of just 3% for the PC-based net audience – now more than 35m.

Much of this increase in traffic is down to improvements in mobile technology – both handsets and network data speeds. Also, many mobile providers now offer fixed-price data plans, meaning users are free to surf the ‘net without fear of incurring expensive bills.

What does this mean for your business? Certainly, it’s important to keep an eye on emerging online trends and understanding your audience is always key to business success.

Does this mean that your website visitors will suddenly start visiting you on mobile devices only? Not really. Most mobile internet usage is highly functional at the moment – football scores, checking the weather, posting to Facebook, etc. But there is certainly a case for ensuring your site is properly viewable on mobile devices and thinking of ways to capitalise on a potentially whole new audience in the not too distant future.

Destroy Definition!

I was just today having a look at our website visitor statistics. One of the stats we have available is ‘referrers’ – that is, a list of other websites that our visitors have come from via a link.

I was delighted to spot this destructive gem amongst the list – someone’s been having a great time destroying the Definition website!

Go on – watch the aliens splat us into tiny pieces.

Out with the old, in with the new

It’s no secret that we all work either remotely or from a small office based at my home and it suits us very, very well indeed.

While it’s undeniably a well-equipped, dedicated space, I’d been feeling for a while that it was getting a bit tired and could do with at least a touch of sprucing.

Like with most things, my motto always turns out to be – ‘Why do things by halves?!’ – so the initial intention of a lick of paint and a new chair rapidly ballooned into an entire office facelift from top to bottom.

Out went all the desks and all the chairs. Out went pretty much all the paper, filing cabinets, storage, etc. On the walls went a completely new paint job (a rather fetching fresh green and dark chocolate brown combination). In came a whole set of brand new desks and chairs.

And all I can say is: “Ah.. that’s better!” It only took 4 trips to IKEA and 5 trips to B&Q too!

This picture taken from my phone doesn’t do it much justice – but I can assure you it’s much improved!

What are we up to?

We’re knee deep in some really excellent and varied projects at the moment:

  • 4 websites for national primary schools ready to go live;
  • A total re-design for a very large! website that we have to keep hush about;
  • Progressing nicely on the re-design and development of a UK University’s intranet;
  • A complete website facelift for an international engineering firm, with branches all over the world;
  • Re-designing the website for a Greenlandic newspaper (seriously!)
  • Working on several high profile projects for a prestigious company in the Middle East

It’s fair to say that it’s ‘all go’ at the moment! We can’t wait to post details of these new sites as they go live.

Clifton Children’s Centre is live

While we always like working on large-scale projects we can really get our teeth into, we also equally enjoy working on smaller scale local projects.

Once such project was for Clifton Children’s Centre, a local Hull Children’s Centre providing child care facilities and services for families across the city. Both our children went to nursery at Clifton when it was ‘just’ a nursery school and I’ve kept in touch with them since – I was even a governor at one stage!

We were really pleased when they asked us to design a small, simple website to advertise their child care services and happily obliged. The site has no bells and whistles, and is awaiting a good deal more content as I write this, but it’s already making a huge impact on the centre’s intake.

Read more about Clifton’s child care and nursery services in Hull.
